Happy Birthday, C:F!

by C:F Team on 1st October, 2010 at 12:23 AM CEST

Did you know that C:F has turned one last week?

On September 24, 2009, a little green paper plane took off from the ground of C:F office in Ljubljana, Slovenia, carrying the C:F team's nervousness, excitement and hope. Next thing we know, the plane soared through the sky and unfolded itself into a fruitful Competition, a global yet intimate Summit, and a vibrant Future Book. What was the journey like and what kind of future lies ahead? Let's hear it from the C:F team.

On the future of C:F, Andreja Kodrin (C:F President and Founder) says:

Encouraged by the amazing results of the first year, we have worked hard in the last months to prepare a five year strategy for aspiring and engaging global youth to think about their own future and the world's future. We will also actively involve C:F members into content, Competition and Summit development and transfer the organization and management in their hands.

At the moment, we are in the process of host selection for 2011 and 2012. It is not easy job as it is linked to our new strategy, feedback from our members and specific requirements from host organizations that are also limited by weather and other condition. However, we are very optimistic to close all these processes as soon as possible and to announce the competition within next months.

On the experience of the past year, Metka Ule Novak (VP Operation and Marketing) says:

Challenge:Future started in a small office in Slovenia couple a years ago. Looking at it now, I think we were really brave and enthusiastic at that time. We had great aspirations, but never knew what C:F would really evolve to be.

Gradually, C:F became a community of great individuals from all around the world, youth that really cares about the future. And just knowing that there is 14.000 young people ready to challenge the world at this stage is so inspiring that we now have a big responsibility towards youth generation and to our planet as together, we can and we will make the impact. Are you all ready to jump in C:F 2nd year pool and see what it has got for you?

On the outcome of the first inaugural C:F year, Nadya Zhexembayeva (VP Knowledge and Development) says:

The most remarkable part of this experience is the power of free play - of letting yourself experiment, discover, play with ideas, projects and events. When we started designing this initiative, the freedom we had to start something from scratch and to allow ourselves to dream big were truly special. How often do you have a chance to do what you really want? And once you are given a chance - what DO you want?

For me, what I wanted was a sense of hope - a small glimpse of a positive future we all can have. I got more than plenty. The people, the projects, the thoughts, the photos, the questions, the commitments were simply remarkable. And even more so, the hearts and the minds of the Challenge:Future community are breathtaking. I think I am hooked for life :).

Each of the C:F team member also has aspirations to share with you regarding the future journey of C:F!

Tanja (Team's Fairy Godmother): I love the fact that C:F office is wacky, informal and open-minded. From Dan's great advices to Maggies incredible abilities to write and Matjaz's continuous everyday help – that is all I need!

we will have so many different people starting to work for us so one challenge for me is to keep all of them synchronized. I believe that regular office brunches and open-mind conversation can really help with everyday work. Nevertheless one-on-one conversations by the coffee will be at great importance to keep the productivity and satisfaction at best.

Damjan (Chief Designer Dude): I’m a huge sucker for evolutionary design. It should develop, grow and respond to the users. Therefore, you can expect some changes in visuals as well as new features designed in the future. C:F visuals as well as the platform aim to be clear and simple, no bling bling, yet, a lot of fun hidden in it. So, expect some cool and playful stuff. Introduced will be a redesigned badges & ribbons system for example. As far as design is concerned... this year is all wrapped in paper. Recycling, reinventing. This is my clue. The plane stays, yet, it’s getting a whole bunch of sisters and brothers, all set in a lovely build environment. With lovely, I mean artsy-fartsy ultra cool, of course.

Dan (Competition Architect): We hope the new competition is going to gather more and more people around the idea of a sustainable future and of course we are counting on the C:F extraordinary community to help build the future we want. For the next edition we think of engaging actively people all around the world through some local C:F bodies (stay tuned for more) and also to develop a challenge where out of mind ideas should be developed, where everyone can participate, not only students.

Zhikica (Agent Local-motion): During the C:F Summit there was a brainstorming session about sustainable ideas that we can implement. I heard wonderful ideas that can challenge the future. Immediately after that I thought about a more coordinated approach how we can implement it, and this approach was a network of university chapters for C:F. Look for the announcement in the news in the coming weeks!

Sayanee (Summit Mastermind):The next year's Summit will be nothing short of magical. It will be held in a secret location that will call upon more than 100 global youth talents gathered for 6 days for a total experiential learning as well as designing projects that will be implemented. Right from brainstorming for summit activities to collaboration with partners, next year's Summit will be led totally by the youths. Expect to be part of virtual discussions and live simulcasts, where all of us will be coming in from all corners of the world before and during the Summit. Location is no longer a barrier, instead diversity and connectivity of global youths will be the enabler of the next Summit!

Maggie (Monkey with a Type-writer): Look for a C:F community that is about trust, knowledge sharing and opportunities. There are SO many ways to participate in C:F in the future and with active engagement, you will find brand new opportunities for growth, fun and reward. And of course, we will keep things kewl.

Matevz Kmet (Design Orchestra Conductor): We first have to take a deep breath and relax from the pace with which the first Future Book had to be made. Ideas will follow. I am sure that the next one will be something new and different again; that should be a trademark for the Future Book. You should ask a babies that were born at the same time as the first Future Book how the one in 2030 will look like; after all, they are the ones who will be making it.

We hope you had an enjoyable and profound experience with C:F last year. We look forward to a brand new year of adventure as we grow older and wiser together!
