Social Change through Movies

by Jatin Kataria on 25th March, 2011 at 3:13 AM CEST

Hello again,

This is RJ Jats from “Radio CF” – Fresh, Flexible, Fun and Futuristic. Go to your favorite playlist and play your favorite song for you ϑ

Your RJ was thinking that

  • Being a Writer – I can Write anything
  • Being a part of Action team – I can do any action related activities
  • But being part of WRITER ACTION TEAM, I should write about people who are really taking action in actual.

As we are going to rock ourselves in the recently launched CF new competition, major part is to take interviews of the people who inspire you. I thought you will know about action heroes through 1 article only … wooo , then here we go with more than 300 action heroes…. !!

Surprise…!!! ϑ -- don’t be... Here we go - Let me present “MAM movies”: Media for Social Change & Transformation

Mr Madhusudan Agarwal started this movement with used laptop, empty bank account, and dream to tell positive stories and use media for social change and transformation. Along with his wife, Meghna, he began by launching the ‘I Am The Change’ film project, which brought together over 500 filmmakers from all over India to voluntarily make films on over 300 non-profits and social causes in just 101 hours.

Let’s talk with Co-Founder of MAM movies..., Mr Madhusudan Agarwal

Tring tring… Tring Tring..

Hello Madhusudan, I am sure you are enjoying your rocking life of movies. I know making movies on action heroes and that to more than 300 is not a joke.., it’s like you started and movement and we can call it revolution. Our listens from more than 190 countries wanted to know more about you and MAM movies. I have few questions for you…

1) Tell us about your personal journey as well as a. Who & What inspire you to start MAM movies, b. How you started?

“My personal journey began with my graduation from Academy of Art University in San Francisco California. With Major in motion pictures and television, I made films from church to strippers but yet something was missing. With bag pack and donated camera I came back to India, started travelling and stayed with Himalayan Yogis to modern teachers.

Turning point came when I was making film on one of the last active disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, Dwarko Sundarani ji and stayed with him for 2 months. While I was leaving he told me Madhu find your truth through whatever you do. Filmmaking is just an instrument, realize your true goal. This blessing later gave birth to MAM.

MAM, which means ‘I Am’ in Sanskrit, for us it personifies the soul, the brahman. Our foundation was personal change. We had to be the change we wished to see, as Gandhiji said Our mantra: make a film, make a difference

Our first effort: Genesis film project, a film competition held in Mumbai where we invited 101 filmmakers to make films for 101 NGO’s in just 101 Hours. It was an instant hit, with more than 300 filmmakers participating, we got 90 films on time and which motivated us to do it every year.”

2) Your 3 favorite movies

Very difficult to say, as there are so many other wonderful films, but if you insist here are 3 movies: GoonjAdvityaSmile

Great Jatin!! As any other instrument, media is + or -, it only depends on how it is used. This story is a good example that, firstly we need to discover ourselves and see how can we help the world with our talents, 2) the road to success is long and stony, but it requires passion, persistence and big dreams, 3) in the way we will find others with similar intentions, so let´s make a PARTY :-)!! haha..

Well, in summary, I like your article and excelente approach for the competition. Congratulations!!! ;-)

Stunning work. I like the idea but can it really move beyond the idea expressed in the films made. The media is seen too often as a means to an end when it can actually be an end in itself. That, i would consider success. Best of Luck! :)
