Stretch your thinking

by Mariam Rafique on 5th December, 2012 at 1:01 AM CEST

I’ll tell you of the easiest way to stretch your thinking. And you’ll love me after this. These are simple steps, but you have to follow them through and through:

1. Take a big saw – one that’s really sharp on the other end.

2. Stand in front of a mirror and cut off your forehead – from one eye brow to the other. Should leave you with a semi-circle of your head.

3. Take the detached part and hang it on two long poles – one on either edge of the semi-circle

4. Ask 2 people to pull each of the poles as far apart as possible – in the opposite directions

And there you go! You’ve just stretched your brain =)

I told you you’d love me! For sharing such a nice laugh! But you know what, that’s actually tip 1 of my article!

I am definitely not a psychologist or a counselor or even closely related to medicine or human behavior. But after a lot of research on ‘ways to stretch thinking’, it was easier to conclude:

There might not be 1 correct path to broaden thinking, but there are definitely certain things that completely kill your thinking!

And we need to definitely avoid these 5 Key DON’T’s:

1.  Don’t Kill your Imagination!

Do ever find yourself smiling or smirking when someone’s scolding you? You’re probably imagining them as big fat screechy villains. It’s great if you are! Imagination gave birth to million dollar characters like Harry Potter, Bat Man, Spider Man and so many more! Medical studies prove that a strong imagination helps survival through the roughest illnesses too.

Treat yourself to a Calvin & Hobbes comic each time you feel low on imagination, it definitely works for me!

2.  Don’t Sleep too Much:

Or eat too much or even talk excessively. All of these numb your head and weaken your brain activity – in the long run. I’ve extended the famous saying to say:

‘Early to Bed, Early to Rise, More to Gulp, Less to Bite, Better to listen, Chatter in a Small Size makes a person healthy, wealthy, brainy and wise!’

3.  Don’t be a couch-potato!

Are you slouching and buried deep in a cozy sofa? Well get up! Nobody got any different great ideas by just sitting around! And are you letting Grey’s Anatomy and Facebook take up most of your evenings? Well that’s sad because you think Einstein had time to read even his own news in the paper?

Go take a walk, breathe in fresh air, exercise and observe! You’ll feel your thinking going better and faster.

4.  Don’t get fixated in a routine:

And become an aunty who doesn’t like adventures and never steps out of her comfort zone. Experiment, learn, embrace and try! Like, when was the last time you tried writing a poem yourself? Or have you made a hand-made card yourself recently? Or have you ever tried talking in Chinese?

Using a ‘concept fan’ is a good way to jog thinking. Pick any object and try answering the basic concept it’s made for. Example, a chair is made as a sitting tool. Now can you think of other things that meet the same concept? Try producing a business idea!

5.  Don’t do it alone!

Most importantly, being in a silo or not meeting new people regularly also means not meeting new ideas! If it’s not possible to meet new people in person, log online and visit blogs that you haven’t been to before – leaving comments there can also help introduce you to newer ideas!

So good luck in thinking better and more! Remember, at least you’re thinking of using your head power more – you’re already a step ahead than those who aren’t even thinking yet!

Mariam, you are awesome! I love your articles!

additional tip: it is estimated that if you read before going to sleep, the chances are that you will deal better with the issues which will bring up the other day! And as you say, if you offer your brain something to feed its imagination, you are for sure not going to stay in your comfort zone.
