Time never dies. The circle is not round.

“It is the time just before rain, the
time when the flies bite like
kamikaze, when the birds fly low
and the sky hangs overhead black,
heavy and expectant, when all the
colors are washed in gray, subdued
and intense, yet punched through
by radiant hues.
It's about to burst.
A heavy sense of expectation, of
lowering, of time just before
something large overwhelms the
picture, the frame, the rhythm, the
colors, the light, the music and the
characters.
Still, the story moves fast, faster
than words.”

                       Milcho Manchevski

What more to say about a masterpiece, about one of the best Macedonian movie of all time, an Oscar nominee, Golden Lion winner “ Before the Rain”? Although made in 1994 it is so well-known and acknowledged that is being taught at universities around the world. The movie is in three parts and it deals with several love stories, ethnic conflicts, depicting tradition and religion, and it ends at the point where it begins making a circle.

“Time never dies. The circle is not round.”- What did Manchevski, the writer and director of the movie mean by that?

You can see Before the rain as an extremely violent movie, but that is only the first layer on the surface. I hope and I suggest that you dig much deeper. The trailer of the movie follows:

Throughout the movie you will be moved by the excellent soundtrack by the band Anstasia. Listen to the several links. Link 1. Link 2.

Is Manchevski trying to tell us that one must break the ‘circle’ of violence to bring about change? That we are all the same, all equal, all one? If we are not equal, what do we have to do to change that?

Before the Rain is an argument for the inevitability of human action and the difficulty we have in affecting change. Life goes on and on, despite our best efforts to help or hinder it. In that sense, it is larger than us. Time is beyond our control. The priest who says that "Time never dies" at the beginning modifies that statement in the final scene to "Time doesn't wait."

If time doesn’t wait, what are you waiting for?

Guys I think Link 1 and Link 2 are not working! Anyway, found the soundtrack! :))

Jasminka great ATW! Time... perennial topic! I think it's out of most important thing for an individual to understand time... time on the clock and that other time... the cosmic time if I dare say.

Looking forward for your next piece!
Cheers,
Stefan
