The comparison mantra

by Mariam Vadria on 28th March, 2013 at 12:21 AM CEST

Daddy says Lincoln’s son got into Harvard,

And you haven’t even gotten a single A in O’s.

Mama says the neighbor’s wife has a chauffeur-driven Ferrari,

And I’m jealous of how fast she goes!

Sister says everyone in college has a new hairstyle,

I look so old.

Brother says I want to go to Paris ‘coz Bennie went,

And for that I want lots of gold!

Teacher says Alice is such a fast learner,

What makes you so slow?

Best Friend says Aaron’s girl is so petite,

And gets depressed ‘coz her own skin doesn’t glow L

I say I am no good on Twitter or Facebook,

Or in fact in life and all of its genres.

The reality is that we’re all sadly singing

The Comparison Mantras!

These Comparison Mantras are killing,

They are definitely suicide.

If you want to die anyway why give your mind and heart an ache?

You could also die while having an adventure on the Seaside!

So let’s resolve to reform this ‘comparison’ habit,

And jump out of this trap.

Before it’s too late,

And you’re too low to change your perception of yourself as ‘crap’.

First things first you need to know

Is that comparison’s not always a bad snow.

You could use it to compete and show everyone down,

Or use it to inspire and eventually wear the crown!

Two, it would always help to remember

That people only post their Angelina pose on Facebook.

And will always paint a positive picture,

Not one of them crook.

Third’s to be told to yourself in the mirror,

When your life seems like a complete horror!

You are indeed one in a million, with no one like you,

That’s proven by your ID if not your IQ!

A fourth point here I’d like to make,

Is that comparisons actually everyone’s cup of cake.

If it’s not looks, it’s money,

If not that it’s your best buds honey!

Displeasure is what everyone feels, it’s common,

But letting “they have it I don’t” get on you is an omen!

Go become bigger and better, nothing’s stopping you,

Brace, courageous and positive people like that are very few!

Theodore Roosevelt was an incredible man

Saying Comparison’s a Thief of Joy.

Let’s break the Comparison Mantra,

It is just meant to destroy!

Thank you so much for the warm encouragement everyone! I wanted to try a different style, hope it helps put across the point i.e. uselessness of over-comparison too :)

"There will always be someone better at something than you are" well, i think i would think twice before taking advice from a guy named zero. Also comparison is a good thing, it is essential for critical thought and so you can see what is better and use it instead. If someone is better than you are at something what you do is not go cry in a corner but get out there and prove them wrong or get better at what you do best
