C:F Nigeria Innovation Jam

On May 10th, 2013, C:F Nigeria hosted one of the most successful national youth events - Innovation Jam under the title “Create Future with Creating Opportunities.” What actually happened there?

The Innovation Jam kicked off by 10 am at the CITS (Center for Information Technology System) at the University of Lagos, Nigeria. Nubi Kayode opened the session with an introduction speech about Challenge: Future. The participants were touched by Challenge: Future’s slogan “Together we are more, together we can,” and showed great interest in this global initiative. Micheal Silas gave an introduction speech about AIESEC which is an international non-profit organization that provides students with leadership training and internship opportunities at for-profit and non-profit organizations. AIESEC in Nigeria is in over 17 states and has empowered over 1000 students and graduates through its global learning, leadership and exchange programs.

What did we learn at the C:F Nigeria Innovation Jam?

The guest speaker, Mr Ubong King is the Chief Executive Officer of Protection Plus Services Limited – PPL which provides services to companies with unique and specialized needs using their security, maritime and logistics anywhere in West Africa. He spoke on “INNOVATION IN BUSINESS” he told us that innovation in business does not have to be a groundbreaking invention but it is an idea that is used to cover every aspect of your business which can be your services, products, delivery or business process. He gave insights on how innovation in business creates success because it yields both bottom and top line returns, he encouraged us (Nigerian youths) to venture into business with passion for solving a need and making profit, change the way we think about products and services, technologies, processes and business models. Innovation is the key to economic progress which is essential for business development by encouraging innovation in business we create success.

Nubi Kayode, Ex- Chapter President Challenge:Future Nigeria, member AIESEC Alumni (Turkey),artist, entrepreneur(Co-Founder at Easy Appetite, Partner at OTEKBITS Media and Digital Media Strategist at All Seasons MediaCom), spoke on “INNOVATION IN SUSTAINABILITY AND LEARNING.” He said that innovation in learning is implementing best practice standards in helping consumers achieve their individual potential through out the developmental life span while innovation in sustainability paying for the true expenses associated with the products we consume thereby enhancing value and real growth. We learn to manage our time and also encourage environmental products and services which in turn encourage change which nurtures knowledge.

Micheal Silas, ex- President AIESEC in Calabar, entrepreneur and youth activist spoke on “INNOVATION IN LEADERSHIP” which involves synthesizing different leadership styles and experiences to produce productivity. For good leadership a great change is needed in the way we communicate, language, leadership authenticity and resilience. Decision making by experimentation allows the impossible to become possible and in turn allows leaders to know about their roles in organization, it allows a leader deal with challenges, gives insights on how to motivate and create innovative thinking.

What were the outcomes?

The event was so inspiring that instead of ending by 1pm, it ended by 3pm. All participants gave their opinions and entered interactive discussions that led to creation of several ideas for creating jobs or new youth initiatives in Nigeria. The people exchanged ideas, shared experiences and jammed on the topic of creating jobs! Challenge:Future and AIESEC were happy to inspire the participants but also lead them to the future steps of support and making their ideas reality. The real outcome of this Innovation Jam is not simply the created ideas, but the change in the lives of all participants and organisations that took part in it.

Nigeria proved to have great youth, ready to jam, bounce, work and impact! Next time, we hope to host a global jam session and invite all of you to join :)
