EXCITE! Create Future with Creating Jobs Singapore

by C:F Team on 12th June, 2013 at 12:05 PM CEST

A unique, high level program flow has gathered 30 polytechnic and ITE students from 6 different institutions descended on Sustainable Living Kampung at Bottle Tree Park, to participate in the inaugural EXCITE! programme organized by Ground-Up Initiative (GUI), jointly sponsored by DBS and in partnership with Challenge:Future, CEEMAN and Youth In Action Program.

Starting on June 1st with Understanding Reality and Understanding Ourselves, participants dedicated their time on setting the stage for the future. The global economy is changing rapidly with the environmental, political and technological landscapes constantly changing. Participants were exposed to these global and local realities, hears the personal stories of why the three social enterprises were setup and finally map their shared future to understand where they stand in it. They were given some background information about the challenges and were asked to research on them over  the week without knowing which challenge they will be tackling in Week 2.

On 8th June, the event continued with full speed! the topic this time was “Walking in the Shoes” and the participants worked on specific challenges set by the three social enterprises in the GUI ecosystem. The best way to understand a  social enterprise is by working on the hard problems that they are working on themselves. Instead of a one way teaching, this transformed education into a beautiful dialogue aiming to help both the students and the social enterprises.

A workshop on the Art of Selling and the personal story about career progression and job experience was also part of the event. The main purpose of the workshop was to infuse essential soft skills in participants that are important not only for entrepreneurs but for corporate professionals as well.

On June 15th, the programme will continue with “Creating our Future” and on 21st June, Challenge:Future core team members will join the event under the topic “Facing the World” International and local speakers will share their stories and experiences in the theme. Business leaders will also be invited for the event to show them what the youth of Singapore are thinking and how they can shape the future of society together.

The programme has been very popular among the students, and already, we can see some changes in the participants after just one day at our Kampung. For many of them, this would have been their first time actively interacting with people from other schools, listening to the varied histories of our social enterprises, and getting their hands dirty touching the ground and weeding. In this day of firsts, they are gradually seeing the connections between themselves as an individual, and how they can actively play a positive role in society.

We hope that through EXCITE!, GUI and Challenge:Futurw would be able to inspire youths around the world to live meaningfully and make a difference in society.”

More than ever before, it's important to get young people working and learning together from peers and experts, exchanging ideas and sharing best practices. I would describe the event as intensive, engaging, eye-opening, interactive and life-changing. Well done guys.
