Rifat’s EqualTo = Impact

by C:F Team on 27th January, 2014 at 12:28 PM CEST

Making someone smile is probably the best thing on Earth. A smile that really comes from heart and opens up a gateway to bridge the gap between frustration and hope – is really worthy. Well, any small act of kindness may seem too small to change the world. But some of the initiatives - started at the grass root level - generate meaningful impact to the community and become a source of inspiration for many global youth leaders to make big step to change the world. And one of those initiatives is EqualTo in Bangladesh, founded by Rifat, former C:F chapter president in Bangladesh and current mentor for many youth leaders. Unlike Rifat for many of the young professionals it would be a No-Go to manage time and energy to step out of the cozy office room and walking in a dingy slum just to see how little underprivileged kids living their life. And then try to bring some meaningful impact in their life. EqualTo and Rifat is doing the same for the two years and impacted more than hundred underprivileged kids’ life who barely can buy education materials and continue their schooling.

The most recent impact generating activity of EqualTo took place in Mohakhali slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is namely the largest slum area where hundreds of underprivileged kids live with their family. Many of the children are below 15 years of age and involve in physical labor to contribute in the family income. In the same area, there are a good number of NGOs who are running informal school and brac is one of them.

On 18th January this year EqualTo team went to one the schools and shared some moments of happiness with underprivileged 30 kids who are below 12. In the whole class there is no proper sitting arrangement but kids were happy to sit on the floor while listening to their teacher. "It was great to see the little champs who dream to be pilot, singer, actor, and cricket player, doctor and so on. The color of dream in their eyes is very same that a privileged kid has. The level of playfulness and preferences are very same. But poverty is the only difference that make these little kids fall short of their dream. And sometime bounds them to get involved in child labor. May for some of us it is very hard to imagine but getting few pens, pencil, a pencil box and little other stuff at absolutely free was unbelievable for them," shares Rifat.

Besides giving free education materials, another EqualTo member Rabbi shared why they need to continue their education and how to maintain cleanliness. "At the end it was amazing to sing with all the kids. EqualTo may not be able to inspire all the underprivileged kids of the country yet a small step is better than doing nothing. Many of us are so busy with our own goals and target that we overlook the urgency of contributing in our community. Rifat and EqualTo is a complete anomaly in this case,"adds up Rifat.

A child’s dream of becoming a pilot for instance can be shattered just because his/her family can’t afford to buy few education materials which costs 200-300 BDT (nearly 4 USD). And little act of kindness by EqualTo (www.equalto.org) may help that kid to cherish the bigger dream of his life. Fair enough. Isn’t it? When world is busy organizing seminars, building business model – effort of this type is only talks of generating impact. Probably we hardly should waste time on anything but making meaningful impact in own community.

Do not fear change! – The famous words from Fareed Zakaria. Truly indeed!
